Started out SO GOOD, with a fabulous hook. I was really invested. The world was brutal, but I had hopes for something good coming out of it. Then I thought, "Hold on. They're going to have these kids fight in some kind of test battle thing aren't they? This reads like YA dystopian trilogy fiction...which means....this has a cliffhanger, doesn't it?"
Google revealed that all my surmises were correct. So I was out of there. Hard nope on cliffhangers. Hard nope on the gritty test trope. I looked online and found a synopsis, and returned the ebook.
If gritty dystopian trilogies with cliffhangers, child abuse, vicious authoritarian regimes, and a never-ending story are your thing, this book will definitely work for you. What I read was engaging as far as I went.
