Sean is a dick.
McCaffrey has a real problem with gender balance. A man must be in charge. Explosive anger means strength. Good little women serve. "Make me a sandwich" says Sean to Sorka, who is a better person than him in every way. And Sorka does. FAUGH!
This book tells the story of how people came to Pern, how they survived thread, how dragons were developed, and how a technologically advanced society devolved into a medieval one. It does it pretty well.
