The Light Fantastic

Author:  Terry Pratchett

Begun: Dec 2nd 2024

Finished: Dec 11th 2024

Type: Ebook on Libby

Rating: 8/10

The Light Fantastic begins shortly after Twoflower, Rincewind, and The Luggage jump off the edge of the Disc.  Spoiler alert!!!  The Spell saves them.  Shenanigans ensue, including talking trees, rescuing maidens from Druid rites, attempted and successful wizard assassinations, a magical book, a self-aware spell, a gingerbread house, trolls, DEATH's daughter, a magic souvenir shop, and the looming end of the world.

Characters include:

- Cohen the Barbarian, octogenarian badass
- Bethan, Druidic maiden unwillingly rescued by Cohen
- D E A T H
- Rincewind, of course
- Twoflower, naturally
- And my favourite character whom I love so very much: The Luggage.

I want a Luggage.

I honestly don't know where people get off saying that the first two Pratchett books aren't much cop.  They're fantastic.  There are some others I've read of Pratchett's that don't come close to how fun these are.

QUOTES!

"Rincewind had been generally reckoned by his tutors to be a natural wizard in the same way that fish are natural mountaineers."

"Rocks don't fly. They're noted for not doing it"
Which of course reminded me of my most favourite quote of all time, "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't."

"It was louder now, a crisp rhythm like someone eating celery very fast."

"Homesickness rose up inside Rincewind like a late-night prawn biriani"

"But she was too big to be a thief, too honest to be an assassin, too intelligent to be a wife,"
Oooff

"'...there was a whole bunch of people across the street helping themselves to musical instruments, can you believe that?'
'Yeah,' said Rincewind, picking up a knife and testing its blade thoughtfully.  'Luters, I expect.'"
I barked out a "HA!" at that one.
