An irascible aristocrat tyrant who bullies his family discovers his heir is a "weaver's brat" from Up North. Determined to bully said heir he summons him to Darracott Place. Shenanigans ensue. For Hugo is not like to be bullied.
Starts off a little slow, and embarrassingly awkward, but quickly becomes absurd and then absolutely hilarious. It's easy to fall in love with Hugo. The looks of bovine stupidity and the outrageous things he comes out with had me laughing with delight. One of Heyer's best.
There have recently been a spate of audiobooks made for Heyer books and I have to say they are mostly barely adequate. I had to stop listening to one (Reluctant Widow) because it was so very bad. Thomas Judd is alright - though he did give Hugo a Northern accent the entire time which was *completely* incorrect. He's only Northern when he's ribbing his relatives.
