Another comfort read. These Old Shades was the first Heyer book I read, and I enjoyed it immensely. While the ideas espoused in the novel are incredibly old fashioned and sometimes offensive to modern eyes, the story and writing are excellent. It's occasionally laugh out loud hilarious:
"When you become excited, my dear, you remind me of an agitated sheep. Quite irresistible, believe me."
"...she fears he would not accompany her to my hovel. Hovel. Not very polite of Fanny. I must remember to speak to her about it."
"Hôtel" suggested Hugh."
Who knew large houses in towns owned by very reach people used to be called "hôtel"? I had no idea.
Justin is really quite a repulsive human being, but also hilarious and somehow likeable. Leonie is sweet and funny and wild and hilariously bloodthirsty.
Aaaaaaanyway it's basically a Cinderella story set in the mid 1700s. Heyer is justifiably known for her impeccable research, with all the tiny little details bringing the time period to life.
Absolutely delightful.
